SUMMARY:Community Field-walking & Metal Detecting Event
DESCRIPTION:We have been given a wonderful opportunity for 40 detectorists and 50 field-walkers (maximum)\, to explore some of the West Penwith landscape\, once the field has been harvested\, and before it is sown with wildflowers. \nThis community survey will take place near Land’s End\, in the Parish of Sennen\, during the third week of September (Precise details nearer the time to those attending). It is an event in partnership between Hayle Metal Detecting Club\, LMArchaeology\, and the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies. However\, as it is a community event\, members from other heritage organisations will be invited to take part. As long as you are over 18 years old\, and a member of one of the following: Hayle Metal Detecting Club\, Launceston Detecting Club\, an Old Cornwall Society\, C.A.S.P.N (Cornish Ancient Sites Protection Network)\, M.A.G (Meneage Archaeology Group)\, or CAS (Cornwall Archaeological Society)\, you will be eligible to take part. \nThe event will take place from Friday 19th September until Sunday 21st September. \nA prolific amount of flint and stone tools have been found in the surrounding area\, so we are hopeful that the site will be productive. During the event\, you will get real hands-on experience with field-walking and/or metal detecting\, and there will be skills training opportunities for both of these\, as well as with finds. There will be training sessions from 1pm – 4pm on the Friday\, with two full days of exploring on the Saturday and Sunday\, from 9am – 4pm. \nAttendees do not have to attend all three days\, but you are welcome to join us for the whole weekend if you wish and if there’s enough availability! There will be camping available\, but this is limited to about 30 people\, and so\, priority will be given to those travelling from further afield\, such as from North Cornwall. \nThe cost for this event is £10 for detectorists\, and £5 for field-walkers. This is a non-profit event\, but this entry fee will cover materials/resources needed for the event\, and you will also be able to receive some skills training\, and take home the majority of your finds! \nPlease also bring your own lunch\, and anything else you may need during the day (medication\, your entry fee\, suncream etc). Dogs are welcome\, but they must be kept on a short lead. Expect orchestral\, choral\, chamber and cabaret items.\nClive has composed locally for many organisations\, including Television South West\, the South West Sinfonietta\, Plymouth University Choral Society\, Plymouth Museum & Art Gallery etc. Nationally and internationally his music has had many broadcasts – most recently in programmes by the BBC Concert Orchestra on Friday Night is Music Night.\nFor some twenty years he has composed and arranged for the Chamber Ensemble of London with performances in St Martin-in-the-Fields\, Kings Place\, County Hall\, the Banqueting House\, St James’s Piccadilly\, the V & A etc.\nThe talk is also intended to advertise Plymouth Music Accord’s work in education. Clive has served on its committee for thirty years.

SUMMARY:Talk: Iron Men in Wooden Boats by Martin Brockman + AGM
DESCRIPTION:Martin Brockman\, An RNLI heritage education volunteer\, takes you through an emotional audio visual journey of the evolution of lifeboats around Mount’s Bay\, from the wooden rowing boats of the 1800’s to the last of the wooden motor lifeboats in the 1980’s. The presentation touches on some of the most incredible and memorable rescues ever made by the RNLI that happened here right on our doorstep!\nThe SS Suevic is the largest rescue in that institution’s 201-year history. RNLI lifeboats from stations at the Lizard\, Cadgwith\, Coverack and Porthleven\, rescued all the passengers\, including 70 babies\, as well as the crew. The rescue was undertaken using nothing more than four open wooden lifeboats each rowed by six oarsmen. The operation took 16 hours to complete\, and despite the difficult conditions\, not a single life was lost. Henry Trengrouse after watching the HMS Anson foundering on Loe Bar and the terrible loss of life so close to the shore developed a rocket-line rescue system. A system so ingenious that modern day rocket line rescues are still based on…\nAnd of course the Penlee lifeboat disaster in December 1981 when the crew of the Penlee lifeboat Solomon Browne were lost attempting to rescue the crew and passengers onboard the stricken coaster\, Union Star. \nMartin comes from a RNLI family\, his dad\, Nigel\, was one of the crew of the ill-fated ‘Solomon Browne’ Lifeboat when Martin was just 10 years old. Martin’s Brother Neil was a crew member of the ‘Solomon Browne’ and was turned away on that night\, only to remain as crew for the RNLI for over 30 years\, 16 as a decorated Coxswain at Penlee.
