Tales of the Tides – Harrowbarrow Walk, a Wonderful Afternoon

Our Harrowbarrow heritage walk on the afternoon of Thursday 24th September was a great success, thanks in no small part to the excellent leadership of Jean Miller, whose deep local knowledge brought every stop to life. With sunny weather and a friendly group, it was the ideal setting to explore the village’s rich and varied past.

Jean guided us through Harrowbarrow’s fascinating layers of history — from its mining heritage at Wheal Newton and Wheal Fortune, to the chapels, drill hall, smithy, and the National School that once served the mining families of the area. The Bronze Age cist, medieval field systems, and 19th‑century miners’ smallholdings added depth and context, reminding us how long this landscape has been shaped by human hands.

The visit to All Saints Church, though relatively modern in date, proved especially charming. Its simplicity and peaceful setting sparked lovely conversations among the group and beautifully enhanced the whole experience.

The combination of perfect weather, good company, and Jean’s expert guidance made this a truly enjoyable afternoon. Harrowbarrow’s history is every bit as interesting as anticipated, and it was a pleasure to explore it together.

Thanks are due to Callington OCS for their hard work in arranging this.
