SUMMARY:Walk: The Festival of Britain Plaques in St Ives
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of 75 years in 2026. The plaques (very special as Bernard Leach kiln shelves suitably engraved to identify keys areas of town)\, Alfred Wallis grave and a couple of Titanic graves and a sadly misrepresented AWOL soldier’s grave now corrected. Also a little about Emily Hobhouse and her impending 100th anniversary (plaques in town and she lived in St Ives as well as St Ive). Even the famous Green door of Instagram fame will be on route. \nStart at 11am at train station and ending at the war memorial and a chance to see inside St Ia church (and the sad Hepworth sculpture of Madonna and Child) with a lovely/quiet coffee shop in the grounds of the church. \nThe walk will be led by the only Honorary Freeman of the Town\, Tony Mason. There have only ever been 8 other Freeman\, names like Bernard Leach and Barbara Hepworth. \nIf weather is poor on 19th\, this walk will run on 26th. Booking essential as limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Chris Trevena (Dialect Recorder for the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies) will be delivering a free workshop on Oral History Recording for the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies. This workshop will focus on the importance of recording Oral History\, interviewing skills\, recording equipment (ranging from low-end to high-end)\, editing software\, mixing\, and exporting settings for best results. \nThe outcome of the session is to boost confidence in those wishing to record Oral History\, equipping attendees with the basic knowledge for the task\, and how to work with potentially noisy environments to achieve good results. \nPlease expect the talk to last between 40-60 minutes. SUMMARY:Community Field-walking & Metal Detecting Event
DESCRIPTION:We have been given a wonderful opportunity for 40 detectorists and 50 field-walkers (maximum)\, to explore some of the West Penwith landscape\, once the field has been harvested\, and before it is sown with wildflowers. \nThis community survey will take place near Land’s End\, in the Parish of Sennen\, during the third week of September (Precise details nearer the time to those attending). It is an event in partnership between Hayle Metal Detecting Club\, LMArchaeology\, and the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies. However\, as it is a community event\, members from other heritage organisations will be invited to take part. As long as you are over 18 years old\, and a member of one of the following: Hayle Metal Detecting Club\, Launceston Detecting Club\, an Old Cornwall Society\, C.A.S.P.N (Cornish Ancient Sites Protection Network)\, M.A.G (Meneage Archaeology Group)\, or CAS (Cornwall Archaeological Society)\, you will be eligible to take part. \nThe event will take place from Friday 19th September until Sunday 21st September. \nA prolific amount of flint and stone tools have been found in the surrounding area\, so we are hopeful that the site will be productive. During the event\, you will get real hands-on experience with field-walking and/or metal detecting\, and there will be skills training opportunities for both of these\, as well as with finds. There will be training sessions from 1pm – 4pm on the Friday\, with two full days of exploring on the Saturday and Sunday\, from 9am – 4pm. \nAttendees do not have to attend all three days\, but you are welcome to join us for the whole weekend if you wish and if there’s enough availability! There will be camping available\, but this is limited to about 30 people\, and so\, priority will be given to those travelling from further afield\, such as from North Cornwall. \nThe cost for this event is £10 for detectorists\, and £5 for field-walkers. This is a non-profit event\, but this entry fee will cover materials/resources needed for the event\, and you will also be able to receive some skills training\, and take home the majority of your finds! \nPlease also bring your own lunch\, and anything else you may need during the day (medication\, your entry fee\, suncream etc). Dogs are welcome\, but they must be kept on a short lead.
