SUMMARY:Talk: Harry Griffiths by Mike Griffiths
DESCRIPTION:During WW2 just outside the village of St Erth in West Cornwall there was an ‘ULTRA’ secret radio listening station. This was the site of Military Intelligence 6\, (MI6)\, Radio Station St Erth. This station was one of the ‘ears’ of Bletchley Park\, the now famous government WW2 code breaking establishment. Mike tells the story of his father’s work at the station\, as a radio operator\, listening to the German and Italian Secret Services\, Double Agents and many of the war’s major campaigns. The station continued well into the 1960s. Over the last few years Mike has given numerous power point presentations\, to various organisations\, throughout Cornwall\, West Devon and at Bletchley Park. Mike’s presentation has numerous slides with sound. The running time is about 45mins to an hour\n\nMike has also written a book about the radio station entitled – ‘Listening to the Enemy\, War comes to a Cornish Village’\, now available from the Federation’s bookshop – please click here\n\nMike will also have his book for sale on the evening at £10

SUMMARY:Tales of the Tides - Film & Song: "Ferry Tales" Film + Burraton Boys - Shanty & Song
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a wonderful evening of film and song. \nWe will be showing “Ferry Tales by Gerald Truscott”\, filmed in 1994 and researched\, scripted and produced by Peter J Wildin\, Iris Solutions. Introduced by John Hooper and augmented with a brief account of Saltash Ferries from 1832 to 1961 by Sir Vernon Seccombe. Traditionally the Waterside community of Saltash made its living from the River Tamar\, the world in which Gerald grew up. Gerald was a seasoned story teller whose stories are threaded with sayings and empathies from the times. \nThe evening will be “bookended” by the Burraton Boys singing a selection of shanties\, maritime songs\, and Cornish material. \nFormed in 2014 by members of the Burraton Male Choir\, The Burraton Boys have grown into one of South East Cornwall’s most versatile and heartfelt singing groups. Beginning with Cornish and sea songs\, their repertoire has blossomed over the years to include folk music\, popular favourites\, and both traditional and alternative Christmas pieces. Each year they raise thousands of pounds for charity. \nA welcoming community event as part of Tales of the Tides: Voices of the Sea. \nFull Programme:-\n1830hrs Doors open\n1900hrs Burraton Boys – Shanties & Sea Songs (30 minutes)\n1930hrs Break – Refreshments (Tea & Saffron Buns)\n1950hrs Film – Ferry Tales (50 minutes)\n2040hrs Burraton Boys – Cornish songs (20 minutes)\n2100hrs Finish \nBooking Essential – Email: lynnsmarsh@aol.com Tel: 01752 844255
