Festival of Walks – Commencement

FOCS Walking Festival June – July 2025
You are invited to join our experienced walk leaders for a guided walk of their area. This has always been an important and enjoyable part of Federation Summer Festivals and we hope you will participate in this event.
FREE OF CHARGE but please book with walk leaders to maintain safe numbers.
WALKERS – PLEASE BOOK WITH WALK LEADER WITH SOCIETY NAME, NAMES AND NUMBER IN PARTY WITH CONTACT DETAILS OF MAIN PERSON.
Please make your own provision for food and drink unless otherwise stated.

Monday 9th June 10.30 am – Leader Geoffrey Bennett, Gover Valley to Carne Stents, with an opportunity to view Carne Stents Pit, site of the start of the China Clay Strike in 1913. Limited parking available at Montana, Stoney Hill, PL25 5RB, otherwise in Trevanion Lane, Trewoon PL25 5SX. An easy walk with one steep climb.

Wednesday 11th June 6.30pm – Leader – Adrian Wilson. A circular walk from the village of St. Dennis to the historic hamlets of Enniscaven and Gothers. Come and hear the story of St. Dennis parish from the Iron Age to the Industrial Age and how the parish changed from an agricultural one to the leading China Clay parish in Mid Cornwall. Listen to how the church was built inside a Dinas, and of the most important Tin Streaming works in Western Europe and much more.
Distance just under 3 miles, time around 1 1/2 hours, walk difficulty easy to moderate, walking on quiet lanes so good walk shoes should suffice, one steep downhill lane and one moderate gentle short climb.
Meet at St. Dennis Church, parking and toilets at the start of the walk with the kind permission of the Parochial Church Council

Friday 13th 10.30am – Leader – Trevor Smitheram – Hayle A walk from Foundry Square to North Quay, a flat and easy walk. Saturday 14th 2.30pm – Leader – Mark Camp: Meet at the entrance to St Martin’s Cemetery, East Looe, PL13 1NX. Free parking and toilets are available at St Martin’s Hall. The older parts of the cemetery are on uneven ground, so good footwear required. E-mail mark@walkaboutwest.co.uk to reserve a place.

Sunday 15th June 2 pm – Leader– Brian Oldham: A walk around St Martin’s Churchyard starting at the tower of St Martin’s Church, the entrance to the Churchyard is from Church Street North at SX2539264448 or PL143AX. On street parking is on Church Street, Church Street South and Church Street North, or in Sungirt Car Park, off Bay Tree Hill, which is a short but steep walk to the Church. We will be strolling around the Churchyard stopping at numerous headstones to hear something of the lives behind the names inscribed on them. Maximum time of the stroll is one and a half hours, with plenty of opportunities to leave earlier,

Friday 20th 4 pm – Leader – Val Thomas- This walk will start at Madron Green, which is the parking area near the lychgate of the church and Madron Daniel School. This walk will touch upon the history of the area including the church and churchyard, the Memorial Gardens, Memorial House, Landithy Hall and the King William 4th pub etc. There is also a very interesting hidden history involving the Knights Hospitalier of St John which will be explored. Following this part of the talk we will car share to Madron Baptistry and talk about the history of the chapel and well. Approx. 2 hours on flattish ground but there are a few granite steps and possibly mud involved.

Tuesday 24th June 9.45am: Leaders Charles Johns and Priscilla Oates – Walk & Talk: “Salt Workings and Raised Beach”.
Meet at Roskilly’s. Tregellas Barton Farm St Keverne TR12 6NX for coffee at Roskilly’s at 10am.
Park in the overflow parking field off the main carpark.
After the Walk return to Roskilly’s for Lunch.
Please note that to leave our cars there while we walk, we have had to guarantee that at least some of us will return there for Lunch.
We must book in advance, so need to know numbers by Tuesday 17th June to secure the booking

Tuesday 26th June 7pm: Led by Liz Carne & Len Sheppard – Bilingual Walk: Newquay – Tolcarne to Porth Beach
Meet opposite the pedestrian crossing at the top of Tolcarne Beach.
This is an opportunity to learn more about all the views which can be seen from this walk. Covering the history of Newquay from its earliest days. The commentary will be in Cornish and English. The walk will cross grass and slightly rough terrain so please wear appropriate footwear and clothing. If wet weather forces cancellation we will advise via Facebook.
Free, But donations for Newquay Museum are welcome.

Wednesday 25th June 6.30pm – Leader – Adrian Wilson. A walk around the village of Roche and out through Tregonhay, Carbis and Trezaise. Come and hear the history of the village which recent excavations show dates back at least 6,000 years, see the iconic Chapel perched 80 feet up on the rock, hear of tin streaming, tin mining, china clay working and brick making, our unique streams and the old road to Bodmin. Distance about 3 miles, time around 1 ½ hours, walk difficulty easy to moderate, no mud so good walking shoes will suffice. Walking on quiet lanes and hard sand footpaths. One half mile long gentle uphill gradient.
Meet at the Roche Social and Sports Club car park by kind permission of the Parish Council. The Social Club is at the start of Trezaise Road just along from Roche Parish Church. Thursday 26th June 1.30pm: Leader Michael Bunney Walk around Gorran Parish with St.Goran Old Cornwall Society
Meet at the Barley Sheaf Inn, parking is available in the pub car park in Gorran Churchtown. Lunch is served at the pub from 12 if anyone would like to eat they should contact the pub privately.
Walk will be 4 miles with a mix of lanes and cliff path, with a few steep sections.

Saturday 28th – 10.30am – Leader – Di Osborne– Saturday 28th June. Meet at St Mary’s Church Biscovey at 10.30am to follow the walk in the booklet “Windows into the Past ~ the History between Two Inns.” We will walk along the road from the church towards the Four Lords Inn and then walk to The Britannia Inn stopping and learning about the history we are encountering on the way. Walk back to the Biscovey Church Room for a pasty lunch

Friday 4th July 2.00pm Leader: Nicola Wills. “Two Bridges Walk across the River Camel” starting from Camels RFC Car Park walking into town via Anneka’s Bridge, and returning over the Medieval Bridge. Tea afterwards in Egloshayle Church.
Toilets and free parking at the Camels Rugby Club Car Park, directly across the road from the Church.

Wednesday 16 July 1030hrs – Philleigh Way Wood Walk Led by Mike Grice
Itinerary:
1030hrs: Meet at Philleigh Way Wood Car Park w3w: ///munch.sideburns.textiles
1035hrs: The walk will include a visit to the church, and village.
1100hrs: Walk of Philleigh Way Wood Trail about 2.5miles
The walk is through fields and woodland paths.
1230hrs to 1300hrs: Finish

Saturday 26th July 9.30am – St Denys & District OCS, Professor Joanie Willett is planning to lead a walk at Hendra Down, which will include discussion about lithium extraction, and end up at a café for a coffee. Details to follow.
