Talk: “The History of Boat Building” by Gary Mitchell

Gary, from Portmellion, designed many of the iconic fishing boats, both wood and fibreglass, seen around Cornwall. He was the principal designer of a range of fishing boats for Cygnus Marine of Falmouth. The Boat Builder of Gary’s talk is his father, Percy Mitchell, described by Commander W B Luard as “One of the finest traditional boat buildersin the world”.
Born in 1901, Pery began at 14 as an apprentice with a local shipyard.He taught himself to design boats from an old encyclopaedia; later hisdesigns included thewindstar which was often sailed in by King George V1.
All are welcome to hear the stry of, to quote from a review of Gary’s book, “an extraordinary cornish maritime talent”.
