In Memoriam: Elizabeth (Liz) Carne

Elizabeth (Liz) Carne

The Federation were deeply saddened to hear of the recent death of our friend Liz Carne. She was the former President of Newquay Old Cornwall Society, and served the Society with dedication and distinction for many years. Liz’s commitment to Newquay’s heritage, to Kernewek, and to community life was unwavering, and her influence continues to be felt across our work.

A fluent Cornish speaker and a passionate advocate for Cornish culture, Liz was instrumental in strengthening the Society’s bilingual activities. In 2025 she co‑led a bi‑lingual walk at the Barrowfields for the Festival of Walks guiding participants through Newquay’s landscape in both Kernewek and English — a moment that beautifully reflected her belief in making the language accessible, enjoyable, and rooted in place.

As President, Liz championed the Society’s archive, museum, and outreach, always encouraging others to take pride in Newquay’s story. Her leadership, kindness, and humour enriched every project she touched.

Liz was a former Grand Bard of Gorsedh Kernow and will be greatly missed by many across the Cornish cultural community.
