Obituary: Mrs Joan Pauline Biscoe (née Rogers)
1927–2026
The Federation of Old Cornwall Societies notes with deep respect the passing of Mrs Joan Pauline Biscoe (née Rogers), who died peacefully in Wellington, Somerset, aged 99. Though born in Toronto in 1927, Joan’s early return to Redruth shaped a lifelong connection to Cornwall, its people, and its story.
During the war years she was an active and public‑spirited young woman, later training as a nurse in the earliest days of the NHS. After her marriage to Dr Alan Biscoe, the family settled in Stithians, where they raised seven children. Joan went on to serve as a Probation Officer, balancing professional life with her love of sea angling, travel, and community involvement.
Joan’s contribution to Cornish culture was wide‑ranging and sustained. A proud Cornish patriot, she worked tirelessly for fair recognition of Cornish identity, standing up for equal rights in many areas of culture and society.
She was a long‑standing member of Redruth Old Cornwall Society where her commitment to community history was evident in her work with the Redruth Story Group, helping to record and share the lived experiences of local people.
She served as President of Truro OCS, where her intelligence, humour, and seasoned wisdom were greatly valued, and was a key organiser of the Summer Festival at Truro Methodist Church, bringing people together through music and fellowship. Beyond the Society movement, Joan took a keen interest in the Bude Canal restoration project, recognising its importance as a heritage asset,
She organised a Cornish Diaspora Conference at Perranporth, strengthening global connections, and campaigned with determination for a Cornish Assembly, believing firmly in Cornwall’s right to speak for itself.
Joan will be remembered for her bright intelligence, sociable nature, sharp wit, and unwavering commitment to Cornwall. Her long life came gently to its close as Spring turned to Summer in May 2026.
A memorial service will be held at St Stythians Church (TR3 7DH) at 11.30am on Tuesday 7th July, followed by refreshments in the Village Hall. Those wishing to attend are invited to notify Williams & Jose Funeral Directors on 01209 206137.
A collection will be taken in aid of The John Harris Society and The Bude Canal Society, two charities Joan supported with characteristic energy and affection. Friends are warmly encouraged to bring their best singing voice, in honour of a life lived with spirit, conviction, and love for Cornwall.
