Old Cornwall at Truro’s St Piran’s Day Parade

By FOCS President Nev Meek

On Tuesday 5th March banner bearers and OCS representatives gathered in Truro for the annual St Piran Parade.

The OCS banners were paraded through the streets, under the watchful eye of banner marshal, Priscilla Oates. The band played the flora, and everyone shouted “oggie, oggie, oggie,” and “Kernow bys Vyken.”

The inclusion of many children from local schools added to the festive atmosphere and ensured that the younger generations are involved in preserving our traditions. Everyone paraded along Boscawen Street and back before making their way to High Cross, where speeches were made from the steps of the Cathedral. The occasion provided an opportunity for reflection and appreciation of Cornwall’s rich history and heritage. It was a lovely afternoon.

It’s clear that events like the St Piran Parade play a significant role in fostering a sense of belonging and unity within the community.

Thanks are due to Bert Biscoe, President of Truro OCS for organising the event and to all OCS banner bearers for their attendance.
