Second FOCS/ICS Heritage Day in St John

In association with the Institute of Cornish Studies we held our second heritage day at St John. There were table-top displays by Cornwall Heritage Trust, Cornwall Archaeological Society, Saltash OCS, Torpoint OCS, Torpoint Archive, Rescorla Centre and the Federation Bookstall.

Cornish dialect was a theme for the day and entertainment included Dew Varth, Moe Keast, and Nigel Nethersole & Mike Harding. Leadville Parsons, the President of Torpoint OCS gave a number of dialect recitations which were well received by the audience.

Our Dialect Recorder, Chris Trevena, attended all the way from Penzance and captured a large amount of dialect material for inclusion in our Cornish Voices Dialect Project.

Representatives from many OCSs attended including Bodmin, Callington, Liskeard, Luxulyan, Saltash, St Denys & District, St Gerrans & Porthscatho, and Torpoint.

Bob Keys and Lamorna Spry gave a great talk on the projects being conducted by the ICS including Cornish Story, Sounds of Place, and Mapping Methodism.

Pasties, saffron buns and other refreshments were enjoyed by all.

Great credit is due to Torpoint OCS, Saltash OCs, and Bob Keys at St John, for working so hard to make the day a success. The day was funded by a grant from Cornwall Councils Devolution Fund.

We look forward to a third heritage day later in the year.
