Past and present members of Liskeard Old Cornwall Society and volunteers at Liskeard & District Museum will be deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Lewis Rapson on 11th November 2020 at the grand age of 97.
A stalwart of both organisations, John was a major contributor of photographs, artefacts, historical text and the results of his own enthusiastic, original research.
John led a full life; from attending his Aunt Martha’s Highwood House School in Barras Street, serving with the Royal Air Force during WWII and running the family butchery business in Windsor Place. But John will be best remembered by many for his professional photography business in Fore Street in 1947 and Windsor Place from 1952 until he retired in 1987.
As a local historian John will take some surpassing; his membership of many groups included the Royal Cornwall Institution, the Trevithick Society, the Cornish Association of Local Historians and the Stuart House Trust along with many others.
John Lewis Rapson served for many years on the Liskeard Town Council Museum sub-committee and as Recorder for the Liskeard Old Cornwall Society. His contribution to both was immense and an invaluable resource to those interested in the history of Liskeard, and beyond.
Recognition came in 1974 becoming a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd, and in 1999 an Honoured Burgess of Liskeard, he will be deeply missed by many.
