Kea Old Cornwall Society Celebrates 50th Anniversary

On Monday 11th March Kea OCS marked their 50th anniversary with a celebration in Kea. Members and friends gathered at Kea Community Centre for an afternoon of stories, music, singing, and good Cornish food. Their banner was in pride of place depicting the green leaves of their plum trees and the purple Kea plums.

The President Michael Davey recounted the history of the Society, and told us how their banner had originally been made for Kea Women’s Institute, but was on permanent loan following their closure. The Societies colours are purple and green reflecting the colours of the famous Kea plums and the verdant countryside around them. This was followed by a short talk on the Great Blizzard of 1891 and its impact on the Kea area, and a brief speech by the President of the Federation.

A lovely cake had been made for the occasion decorated with the emblem of the Society; Shelia Trembath a founder member of the Society cut the cake. Everyone joined in with communal singing which included Cornwall my Home, the shanty John Kanaka, and of course Trelawney, accompanied by a talented young guitarist.

Everyone enjoyed the tea of Cornish Pasties, saffron buns, and cake all washed down with copious amounts of tea. The members of the Society are to be congratulated for their first class organisation of what was a truly memorable afternoon. Here’s to the next 50 years!
