A huge ‘meur ras’ (thank you in Cornish) has to go out to the St Keyne residents and Liskeard Old Cornwall Society members who turned out for the annual clean up at St Keyne Well on March 23rd 2024.
Especially Colin who rolled up his sleeve, poked around in the outlet pipe and removed a rather large pine cone, resulting in a flow of the cleanest water to be seen for many a year, and a view of the fine semi circular granite base stone, splann!
Ever since 1934 when Albert de Castro Glubb, the first President of Liskeard OCS, purchased the Well for £2 from the Rashleigh Estate and gifted it to the parish church, members have been keeping it in a tidy state to be enjoyed by its many visitors.
After a local wedding, then and now, a sprint to the Well by the bride and groom took place as the first to drink its water would be ‘the master of the marriage’. The more canny of the newly-weds would have collected some water in a bottle and taken a sip as soon as the Vicar had made his final pronouncement.
