Penlee House and Museum – St Austell OCS Summer Trip – August 2019

‘ An intriguing look at the history and culture of West Cornwall’

On a gorgeous mid-August day, a coachload of members bravely took on the trials, tribulations and traffic of the A30 in summer to visit Penzance’s superb Victorian Penlee House and Museum.

After the inevitable delays and diversions, our party was welcomed at Penlee, immediately enjoying an introductory talk about the artistic history of the area and learning, in particular, about the many Newlyn School works on display and about the celebrated featured artist, Sir Alfred Munnings – best known for his equestrian paintings.  60 years since the death of this idiosyncratic and, at times, highly controversial artist, members could study his stunning output from the Cornish years.

Individually, members were then free to explore all the galleries to discover more about the history and culture of West Cornwall. Many thousands of photographs of the area from 1870 up to the present day are housed there, including a Natural History collection; another collection focuses on the riveting social history of the far west of Cornwall, including industries such as fishing, farming, mining and tourism; and the Archaeology Gallery includes a fascinating selection of items from local sites.

Members were served a truly delicious cream tea, on the terrace of the Orangery Cafe. Several commented that it was quite simply the best they had ever tasted! It was time then for more relaxation in the sun, a quick trip to Penzance Promenade itself (where two hardy members swam in the Jubilee Pool!) or a more sedate walk in the beautiful park to admire the sub-tropical plants and mature trees. The tranquil Memorial Garden and the Sensory Garden were particular favourites. Of special note and poignancy was the small plaque to commemorate the ninety crew members of HMS Penzance who lost their lives when torpedoed in the Atlantic in 1940.

Our thanks for such a memorable day out are due to Beckie and Tracey at Roselyn Coaches and to our excellent driver Mark, as well as the administrative and catering staff at Penlee House and Museum.
