Our Hwedhlow an Mortidys – Maritime Memory Day at Calstock Village Hall on Saturday 15th August proved to be a truly memorable and heart‑warming afternoon. Visitors from across the Tamar came together to share stories, and personal memories of life along the river and in Calstock itself.
The hall was busy throughout the day, with people gathered around displays, exchanging knowledge, reconnecting with familiar faces, discovering new pieces of local history, and enjoying refreshments. The contributions from Callington OCS, Calstock Parish Archive, and Calstock Parish History Group created a rich and varied exhibition that sparked lively conversation and genuine community engagement. We recorded people’s memories all afternoon.
The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed, with refreshments, shared stories, and a steady flow of new arrivals. Many attendees commented on how valuable it was to bring local heritage into a social setting where everyone could participate. One attendee commented that he has been “very inspired” by the conversations.
The success of the day shows just how much interest and affection there is for the Tamar’s maritime past — and how important these community memory events are for keeping that heritage alive.
