The first meeting of Mullion Old Cornwall took place in January 1951. Seventy-five years later we decided to celebrate this event on 8th August 2016. It was a beautiful sunny day for a guided walk around the village sharing memories of people and places in 1951. The walk was led by Mullion president Colin Roberts who shared memories from his own family history, including Marconi coming to tea with his great grandparents. Over 70 people joined this walk which occasionally stopped traffic! Thankfully our traffic stewards kept everyone safe. After a pasty lunch, we settled down to hear our more senior residents share memories ranging from the first Old Cornwall bonfire, a warm welcome for a World War 2 Prisoner of War now safe at home, the coronation, sporting achievements and the development of the village, to name a few. This was followed by presentations of Mullion Old Cornwall projects and an introduction to the Marconi Centre. Mullion Old Cornwall is helping St. Mellanus church record gravestone inscriptions before they fade; and committee member Ben Sumpter is writing a book about Mining in Mullion. The book will probably be published next year, but the composition will be dated 2026 for the 75th anniversary. The final event of the day was the cutting of the cake by the Federation President, Nev Meek and Mullion President Colin Roberts. After singing Trelawny, we had cake and tea. We were delighted to host over 60 visitors and guests, who seemed to enjoy themselves very much.
