On Sunday 17th August, St Petroc’s Church in Bodmin became the solemn and proud setting for the annual commemoration of the 1549 Prayer Book Rebellion. Hosted by Bodmin Old Cornwall Society, the event honoured those who gave their lives in defence of our language, faith, and cultural identity.
A magnificent Banner Parade, organised by Federation Banner Marshal Priscilla Oates, saw banners from Old Cornwall Societies across the Duchy carried with pride through the church. Sincere thanks are extended to all Banner Bearers for their attendance and dedication.
The service was graced by the presence of the Mayor and Deputy Mayors of Bodmin, the Grand Bard, Deputy Grand Bard, Immediate Past Grand Bard, and the President of the Federation of Old Cornwall Societies. The final procession was led by Cornish piper Merv Davey, whose stirring music set the tone for a service largely conducted in the Cornish language.
The Grand Bard delivered an uplifting and heartfelt speech, reminding all present of the enduring legacy of those who sacrificed everything for our culture. The ceremony was a fitting and deeply respectful tribute to Cornwall’s historic struggle for identity and self-expression.
