Cornish Dialect was under investigation at our heritage day in Hayle.
On Sunday 12th May, at Hayle the first of our Heritage Days was a great success. Working with the Institute of Cornish Studies (ICS), our day was a brilliant blend of heritage stalls, entertainment , and dialect investigation. The event was supported by displays & stalls by Penzance OCS, Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek, Cornwall Family History Society, Hayle OCS, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, and the Federation’s own display and bookstall.
Entertainment included Jay Cee & Bee, Dew Vardh, Esedhek Rescorla, and Hayle’s own Jonathan and Jill. President of Hayle OCS, Trevor Smitheram regaled the audience with a range of super humorous dialect yarns.
The Federation’s Dialect Recorder, Chris Trevena recorded material for our Cornish Voices Dialect Project, and surveyed attitudes to our dialect. Colleagues from the ICS investigated the changing pronunciation of Cornish place-names, and recorded a a large number of participants.
There was plenty of time for tea and cake, and catching up with old friends; a good day was enjoyed by all.
Many thanks are due to all who helped make the event a success. Why not come and join us at the next event.
