Description: ‘Vol 2 continues the story of Zennor and covers 1600-1649. Before then the people were very shadowy but 28 left wills and 41 had their good listed at death. These probate records give a fascinating insight into 27 families and cover about half the population of the parish. Some of these documents are in poor condition and not easy to read but the author has transcribed them to the best of her ability.
One widow with a new born son was dependent on her neighbours for help. One husband said his wife was not to marry again and his daughter was to do as her mother told her. The wealthy could roast their meat on a spit and an oven is mentioned for the first time. It is reckoned that a third of the population could read and write.
A Rate List of 1613 and the Protestation Returns of 1641/2 show a third of the population moved between those dates. In the English Civil War which ensued Zennor tragicallylost men on both sides.
Summaries at the end of the book include pie charts comparing investment in farming in Zennor with Penwith and the rest of Cornwall. The alphabetical list of families will be useful for anyone tracing their ancestors.’ (Cover blurb).
