On Thursday 23rd July our second Torpoint foreshore walk took place in glorious sunshine, with St John’s Lake and the Tamar looking absolutely stunning. Led by Tom Harvey and Angela, the walk drew a group of 24 participants — including a strong turnout from Torpoint OCS — for an afternoon full of history, landscape, and good company.
Tom proved an excellent guide, finding welcome patches of shade to share his deep knowledge of Torpoint’s past. The group visited Carbielle Mill, once a tide mill, and explored the story of the “pickling pond” where timber was seasoned in salt water for shipbuilding. As we walked along the shoreline, conversations flowed about boatbuilding, medieval chapels, rope walks, the poor house, and the historic 18th‑century Ballast Pond, along with the changing uses of the shoreline buildings.
It was also fascinating to reflect on Torpoint’s original grid‑pattern street layout, and how the town has evolved over time. The walk concluded with tea and cake at Kardkadia, a lovely end to a rich and enjoyable afternoon.
