A Cornish ‘troyl’ – or informal evening of music, song and dance – was enjoyed in St Mawes on the 24th of April, as part of the Roseland Festival.
Part of the Music of the Roseland Project (a joint project between the Cornish National Music Archive, St Gerrans and Porthscatho Old Cornwall Society, and the Roseland Music Society) this event celebrated local folk song and dance with creative new commissions from young and emerging performers, and a headline set from Roseland favourites Du Hag Owr.
Martha Woods, a singer and multi-instrumentalised, reworked two folk songs collected on the Roseland during the 1940s.
Finley Bray, an up and coming instrumentalist, had also been commissioned to write a new tune for the Portscatho Furry – a unique furry dance in Cornwall usually danced by locals and visitors at the annual Portscatho Regatta.

The evening was closed with a rousing set of shanties, Cornish favourites and other songs from Portscatho’s well-known shanty group, Du Hag Owr.
Dr Merv Davey was interviewed on local radio Chaos FM ahead of the evening, and you can read news report about the event here.
