Callington OCS unveils new banner at Gorsedh Kernow Proclamation

FOCS President Nev Meek with Callington OCS’s banner and its bearer, Robin West.

After 75 years of excellent service, Callington Old Cornwall Society decided their banner had to be retired.

Originally made in 1948, the old banner was showing signs of wear, so they approached Susan Rescorla, who had also made the Federation banner, to see if she would make a new one. Meetings in Lanhydrock coffee shop over a period of a few months , resulted in the new banner being delivered and brought into use at the Gorsedh Proclamation ceremony in Callington – where better than for its first outing!

On a background of burgundy with burgundy and pale blue trim, the banner depicts Kit Hill, complete with the orange glow of Tansys Golowan behind it, the DuPath Well and the 2 rivers, the Lynher and the Tamar, which are the boundaries. A beautiful piece of work which will get many years of use.

The retired banner will go on display at Callington Heritage Centre where you will be able to see it, along with this summer’s special exhibition of Gorsedh and Old Cornwall memorabilia and photographs.
