Description:    An extremely imaginative work encapsulating the remarkable art work illustrating faces – the angels – shown on a large number of gravelstones  by a large number of forgotten carvers.   Most are from churchyards in the north of Cornwall, but others too from the Roseland and into the west.    The author explains their symbolism, and researches the families behind the memorial. As a notable artists herself, she comments upon them as images, examining contemporary notions of beauty and fashion.    Every one is shown in excellent colour photographs by Clare Calder-Marshall.   For some this is a rescue job, rcording the images before they are lost to lichen and the passage of time of the stones.
