1 review for ILLUMINATING OUR LANTERN CROSSES

  1. Terry Knight

From Old Cornwall / Kernow Goth, vol 16, no 3, Spring 2023.
Hot on the heels of the superb Ancient and high crosses of Cornwall (also available from your bookshop) comes another rather more specialized work from Cornwall’s leading experts in the field. Unique in its coverage, it is subtitled ‘A catalogue of late medieval Cornish lantern crosses and related stone sculpture’, and is produced in a limited run.
It is the fruit of years of research and study. These crosses have never been examined in detail before. ‘All the lantern cross-heads feature gothic decoration and have sculptured biblical scenes and religious images on their four sides. These include the Crucifixion, Holy Trinity, Virgin Mary, bishops, abbots and figures carved to represent individual saints. After the Reformation many suffered iconoclasm and damage while others were hidden and protected by Catholic recusants, to be discovered or to re-emerge in safer times. The book tells their stories and describes their later restoration by Victorian antiquarians.’
The large 213-page A4 book is nicely produced with, as you would expect from these authors, an index, bibliography, appendices, and hundreds of monochrome photographs. Its price is one of today’s true book bargains. Get your copy while you can. Editor
