Description: ‘The Cornubia led an extraordinary career: the first of the (comparatively) large iron-hulled ships built in Hayle she was the only Cornish-built vessel to serve not only in another nation’s navy but on both sides in the same conflict. As a blockade runner she was one of only a handful to be owned by the Confederate Government and was the joint fifth most successful during the American Civil War. As a blockade runner she captured what is recognised as the last Confederate flag taken in a naval engagement. Of the British-built ships to serve on either, or both, sides in this conflict, the vast majority were built on Clydeside, with other built on the Thames, the Mersey or the Tyne-Tees area; Cornubia is the only British vessel known not to have been buuilt in these ports, another rarity.’ (Introduction)
