Description: John Passmore Edwards, born in Blackwater, Cornwall in 1823, amassed a fortune from publishing, money he used to establish hospitals, convalescent homes, institues for working men, art galleries and museums, as well as libraries in London and Cornwall.  A campaigner against slavery and opponent of the Boer War, supporter of the Chartist and Temperance movements and lifelong advocate of parliamentary reform, he funded an extraordinary number of buildings, and this biography is the most extensive account of his remarkable philanthropy. Arguably he was one of Britain’s greatest benefactors and deserves more recognition.

From Old Cornwall /Kernow Goth, vol 16, no 3, Spring 2023.
24th March 2023 (roughly the time this journal should become available to members of Old Cornwall) is 200 years after the birth at Blackwater, Truro, of one of the most significant of Cornwall’s notable sons, John Passmore Edwards. Arguably he is also one of its most under-appreciated, despite the prominent buildings bearing his name, libraries, museums, art galleries, cottage hospitals, and convalescent homes. For those who have not yet read it, Dean Evans’s biography of the great public benefactor, was published to mark the centenary of his death in 1911. It is still in print, and well worth obtaining.
The remarkable story of Passmore Edwards’s rise in fortune is one of Victorian and Edwardian business success from humble beginnings, but also one of using his riches for the well-being of his fellow man, especially in Cornwall and London.
Besides his gifts to communities, he was involved in anti-slavery, opposed the Boer War, supported the Chartist and Temperance movements and was a lifelong advocate of parliamentary reform.
The author is presently continuing his interest in his subject by co-ordinating numerous events being planned by various organizations, including Old Cornwall, to mark the 2023 commemoration of the great man.

The title of the book is based upon Edwards’s belief that he could help the poor to ‘climb’ by ‘funding the ladder’. Few did more in the cause.
