1 review for KEN YOUNG’S ST AGNES

  1. Terry Knight

Old Cornwall/Kernow Goth, vol 16, no 6, Autumn 2024. The last issue of this journal contained a review of this author’s The Miner with a Camera. He continues his splendid examination of the photographers who have contributed so well to the considerable photographic record which exists of the parish of St Agnes.
London-born, Ken Young came to begin his creative work there in the early 1950s and sustained it into the 1970s. What was a hobby had become a business following his RAF service.
Much of Ken Young’s work was for the local press, and the lively village kept him busy, recording its full social life in images including the numerous clubs, sports occasions, flora and maypole dances, St John Ambulance, surf life savers’ practice, church and chapel, Blue Hills trials, as well as more dramatic occasions such as cliff rescue, shipwreck and bomb disposal – and much more besides. There are appealing photos of the occasional snow falls, and old-fashioned harvest practices, as well as scenes taken for postcards.
This beautifully-produced book of 123 pages has knowledgeable captions which offer genuine information rather than than simply stating the obvious. It is a record for the future which all lovers of St Agnes and district will wish to own. Editor.
